Brooks, Alberta – The Somali community in Brooks, Alberta, is once again striving to establish a unified community organization. Despite previous setbacks, a dedicated committee led by Mustafa Ali Adan and Ikraan Siraji spearheads the effort.
On August 24, 2024, the committee convened a meeting to address the community’s ongoing challenges and present a renewed vision for unity. Adan, the committee’s chairman, emphasized the need for collaboration and encouraged attendees to share their insights and experiences. “We need your advice and example to join us,” he stated.
Deputy Chairman Ikraan Siraji acknowledged past difficulties in forming a cohesive community group but stressed the importance of perseverance. “We have tried several times to build a community, but unfortunately, it has not been successful,” Siraji admitted. “However, we want to try again because many things depend on us.”
The Somali community in Brooks, numbering around 890 individuals, has been an integral part of the city’s fabric, contributing significantly to its growth, particularly through their involvement in the local meat processing industry. However, the lack of a unified organization has hindered their ability to address collective needs and concerns, a challenge that was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The renewed efforts towards unity have been met with optimism. The community’s resilience and the unwavering dedication of individuals like Adan and Siraji are seen as key factors that could lead to success this time around.
As Brooks prepares for new community elections in October, the Somali community’s journey towards unity serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring human spirit and the importance of collective action. The world watches with anticipation as they strive to achieve their long-held dream of a thriving, empowered community.
