Edmonton, AB – April 14, 2025
With the Canadian federal election on April 28 just around the corner, CTSomali is stepping up to get the Somali community talking and voting.
The Somali-Canadian media platform is organizing a TikTok Live event on Saturday, April 19, at 6 PM Edmonton time (8 PM Toronto time) to raise awareness about the importance of voting and civic participation. The conversation will bring together journalists, community leaders, and everyday citizens to discuss key election issues concerning Somali Canadians.
The event isn’t just about listening — it’s interactive. Viewers can join in, ask questions, and share their thoughts live on TikTok. “This election is an important moment for our community,” says Mohammed Adan, host of the event and manager of CTSomali. “We want Somali voices to be heard, and that starts with getting out to vote. This TikTok Live is our way of reminding everyone that your vote truly matters.”
According to the 2021 Census, more than 65,000 Somalis live in Canada, with large communities in Toronto, Edmonton, Ottawa, and Calgary. While the population grows, many Somali Canadians—especially young people—haven’t always felt connected to the political process. CTSomali wants to change that.
“We know that sometimes the information just isn’t reaching people correctly,” says Adan. “We’re using platforms like TikTok because that’s where our community is—especially the younger generation.”
The discussion will cover key topics, including:
- Why the 2025 federal election is important
- How to register and cast your vote
- Issues that affect immigrant and minority communities
- The growing role of the Somali diaspora in Canadian politics
This initiative is part of CTSomali’s broader mission to empower the community through digital media, storytelling, and public dialogue.
